Trop Rock Music Association April Newsletter

Trop Rock Music Association April NewsletterIt’s finally April. As the days get longer, I can’t think of a better way to usher in the warmer weather than listening to Trop Rock Music.

Spring also means that the Trop Rock Music Awards nominations are only a couple of months away.

Some of you may have heard that this year’s Trop Rock Music Awards Show will not be a part of the Meeting of The Minds convention in Key West as it has been in past years. We are working behind the scenes on this year’s TRMA’s, so stay tuned.

If you know anyone who would like to be a part of our growing family, please tell them to visit www.troprock.org. There, they can join us and help us continue our mission to Preserve and Promote Trop Rock as a musical genre, and keep the music going (and growing) for future generations.

All memberships include  monthly e-newsletters, special updates, special discounts and your opportunity to cast your vote in the 2013 Trop Rock Music Awards.

Please remember that we are ALL volunteers, so anything you can do to help us on our mission is hugely appreciated!  If you have time and skills to offer, or any suggestions, please let us know.

As a grass roots organization, we need our members to be looking for opportunities to promote Trop Rock in their communities.  We are always available bounce ideas around, and help in any way we can, but it’s up to each one of us to do their part.

Be sure to Sign In on our website to register for Member Discounts and to post on our Forum!

Keep Trop Rockin’!

Trop Rock in the News
Here at TRMA, we believe “a high tide raises all ships”.

Artists are always the worst at self-promotion, but it’s the key to increasing your fan base!

By letting the media know about your accomplishments, (TRMA Nominations, Awards or other recognition), you are not only bringing new listeners to your music, but you’re helping ALL Trop Rockers! Make a resolution in this new year, to let the media know about you and your music!

We want to hear about your accomplishments! Let us know!

One the biggest ways to promote Trop Rock is to have it featured in as many publications as possible!  Getting “Trop Rock” in front of new eyes/ears is the only way to grow and preserve our music.

If you know of any publications we should know about?  Let us know!

Trop Rock Spotlight by Cindy (Bates) Muir

HUGO DUARTE MAKES THE SONG A STORY

I like to think that someone who starts writing poetry on his own at age six is destined for something big. This describes Hugo Duarte, who did indeed become a poet at a very early age. At age fourteen, a friend loaned him an old guitar and before long, Hugo had taught himself how to play. Having grown up in South Carolina and North Carolina, he called his music “country,” but it wasn’t long before other musical influences had their way and today Hugo’s music is very eclectic.

Starting in 1976, Hugo played just about every music venue in Key West and shared the stage with Jimmy Buffett many times. This was before the term “Parrot Head” was coined and Jimmy was a minor celebrity who loved to make good music with the musicians then living in Key West. What a great opportunity for Hugo…. And also for Jimmy!

Hugo left the southernmost tropics in 1990 and moved to Nashville. He currently lives back in North Carolina and spends much of his time touring on the road. I had the good fortune to hear him and Jeff Pike last year, teamed up as “The Frozen Gringos.” It was a memorable night of great original music. Hugo is a master at making the song a story, like a novel, as he describes it.

Much of his music lends itself to the blues, but he considers himself as part of the fabric that is Trop Rock. His three CDs are Another Day in Paradise, Places along the Road andDon’t Be Fooled By the Hat. Hugo is out on the road even now with the current Frozen Gringo tour and will be winning more fans each week.

If you friend Hugo on Facebook, you’ll get daily updates. Most are humorous, such as the bumper sticker, sign or musical term of the day. Many of his posts, however, show his depth and sense of introspection. My daily dose of Hugo is one of the highlights of my day!

The Trop Rock Spotlight comes to you courtesy of Cindy Bates Muir.

Brief bio on Cindy Bates Muir…..

“I’m one of those who has always loved music. My earliest performance memory was at age four at church and by age 8, I was studying piano. The choral and solo road continued and I wound up with two music degrees from Baylor University. I’m a former elementary music teacher and directed church children’s choirs for 32 years.

A couple of years ago, I started writing a column about Parrot Heads and Trop Rock for a now-defunct magazine. And I truly became hooked on meeting and interviewing the musicians. One of my favorite parts of going to MOTM, Pardi Gras, or other Trop Rock music events is to forge new musical relationships.

I have a beautiful daughter, Lauren Bates, who lives in Dallas and is an artist. And I’m newly married to wonderful Don Muir, whom I’ve known for years through the San Antonio Parrot Head Club. Jerry Diaz was gracious to let us be married on the stage erected for the Pardi Gras Street Party and after the ceremony, a second line jazz band paraded us up to the top of the Tropical Isle, where we had cake for whomever joined us.

I’m also caretaker for the “Jimmy Buffett Museum of Port Aransas, TX,” which is my second home. Come see me if you’re ever on that part of the Gulf Coast. We’ll share a cold libation and listen to…   what else? Trop Rock! ”

The Balmy Palms seeks original song from Trop Rockers

The Balmy Palms® lifestyle brand seeks an original song from the trop rock genre to represent our brand on our website, in radio spots and in other media.

Aspiring singer/songwriters are invited to submit an original song for consideration.

If your song is selected, it will receive airplay on BeachFront Radio, the number one trop rock internet radio station (and repeat winner of the “Trop Rock Station of the Year” title at the annual Trop Rock Music Awards). You’ll also be compensated $400 and your song will be publicized on our website and in other media. And, of course, you’ll get some free Balmy Palms apparel!

Your song should convey the feel-good essence of the brand and put listeners in a “Balmy Palms state of mind™”. The ideal song will evoke images of a carefree island lifestyle and our brand’s tagline “No worries, no qualms…just Balmy Palms™.”

All music and lyrics for submitted songs must be original, written and performed by you. If your song is selected, you must agree to sell us all rights to the song and the submitted performance in return for the $400 compensation. (No worries…you’ll still be able to perform your song and even include it on an album, if you wish.)

Songs must be submitted in an MP3 file format and ready for airplay. Songs must be submitted prior to June 30, 2013.

House Concerts!

Most of you know that our favorite part of running Songwriters Island Radio is the LIVE broadcasts. And the best place to do a live broadcast is from a small venue or house concert. Up close and personal, getting to meet the musicians and the listeners, and enjoying all of the stories that go along with the music. So we are preparing a new feature for our new website dedicated to the folks who put on the house concerts and the musicians who play them. So please help us put together an all inclusive list. If you have a house concert venue, please email me the following information for your venue:

The Name of your Venue

Or, if you know someone who does house concerts, please pass this along to them. Please send all info to sdensler@mac.com.

Here We Go Again! Production begins soon…

Here We Go Again! Production begins soon…

This has always been an exciting part of the year for me. Not only is my birthday this weekend, but Daylight Savings Time begins and Spring is just around the corner! Living up North, every sign of Spring is welcome to me. Out of the dark chocolate hoarding, Kleenex wringing month that is February, March means new life to me in a lot of ways. There are lots of things to look forward to this year musically and here are just a few:

Touring: Check my schedule! Lots of stuff going on through June so far. Soon I’ll be adding upcoming info about Lake Charles, LA in May and possible points west in the fall. If you’d like me to come play at your event or in your yard or tiki bar I’m available for that, too! danihoymusic.com/Calendar.html

CD: Yes, TropiGal will be a year old on April 23rd. It’s time to start the next project. I have a pile of demos into my producer, Kevin Johnston, and we will be having a production meeting soon with plans to have the CD out by sometime in July. The CD is, as of yet, untitled. Along with a whole bunch of exciting new songs, plan on seeing a more interesting package this year with more artwork and info. I’ll be revamping my website and lots of other things, too. You can listen to some demos here: soundcloud.com/dani-hoy

MERCH: New Bottle Poppers are in and I’m working on designs for more clothing options for the summer. Bottle Poppers are only $8. They are available on the website and are available in hot pink and turqouise blue. The pink one is shown and I will update the website soon to reflect the new merch. danihoymusic.com/Merchandise.html

I just got back from having a blast in chilly Tampa for Music on the Bay www.musiconthebay.org/  Next week I’ll be in Key West for a few days with temps in the 70′s. If you’re in town, you can catch Key West Chris Rehm keywestchris.com/ and I at Pearl’s Patio and Green World Gallery on March 16th, the day of the big bar crawl. The event at Pearl’s is the Southernmost Coconut Castaways Jump Up with fun, music and drink specials and supports their Relay for Life Team. Check it out here: www.southernmostcoconutcastaways.com/Default.aspx Just look for the Events Box and click on the Jump Up info.

That’s it for now! I hope it wasn’t too much. Always feel free to give me feed back, of course. And, thanks for reading!

Hope to see you at the End of the Road,

Dani

Groundhog Day from Dani Hoy

OK. So, this email has nothing to do with Groundhog Day. From the land of Puxatawney Phil and Octarora Orphie, the subject of this email is just to point out that we are just six weeks closer to Spring! While winter hasn’t been especially heinous this year, it’s definitely been colder than the last two. Snowfall has been minimal in my neck of the woods and hopefully will stay that way! Up north this type of weather is necessary to make sure certain types of plants continue to thrive, among other things. Listen to my song “Paradise” and you’ll recognize the spirit it takes to get through the darker part of the Wheel of the Year.

I had a brief respite from the cold when I visited Southwest Florida for the first time. My short tour took me to Bonita Springs, Anna Marie Island, Arcadia and Lake Placid! You can read about it here on my blog:danihoymusic.blogspot.com/

I’m traveling to Pittsburgh next weekend for Cabin Fever where I’ll be playing Saturday afternoon. The Calypso Nuts (www.calypsonuts.com/) storm the beaches Friday night and Tropical Soul (www.tropicalsoul.net/) will transport you to your favorite island destination on Saturday. www.steelcityfins.org/events.php (scroll down to see the event.) February 16th I’m playing a showcase at the Blue Moose Bar & Grille in Harrisburg as part of the Millennium Music Conference and February 23rd is our Midwinter Tropical Day at Moon Dancer Winery in Wrightsville, PA. Look below to see more details!

In March I head back to Tampa for Music on the Bay and then, two weeks later, I’ll be in Key West with Key West Chris Rehm (keywestchris.com/) and Captain Josh (www.capt-josh.com/) at Green World Gallery, The party is on March 16th. If you can’t get there, you can watch it all here:www.greenworldgallery.com/live-koz-cam/

So far, 2013 is looking like an exciting year! There are plenty of irons in the fire right now. When I have more details you can count on me letting you know about them!

My songwriting for the next CD continues in earnest. I have quite a few done but need to work on a few more before I can get into the studio. I have ten completed so far, at least another five to get done (though, to be honest, I am going to work on more than that.)

OK! Happy Groundhog Day and I hope this email finds you healthy and hopeful!

See you someday at the End of the Road,

Dani
