Buffett rallies voters for Gwen Graham

From Tallahassee.com: “Buffett rallies Tallahassee voters as early numbers come in

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band brought some beach-filled flair to congressional candidate Gwen Graham’s campaign Wednesday.

Less than a week until the Nov. 4 General Election, the over-40 victim of fate fired up a Hawaiian-shirt and lei-festooned crowd of more than 500 in Tallahassee.

“It’s pretty simple, enemy of the ocean or the great Gwen Graham,” Buffett said standing with Graham and her father Bob Graham before playing. “A great Florida family of public servants and that’s why I’m here.”

Graham faces Rep. Steve Southerland R-Panama City to represent Florida’s 2nd Congressional District in what has become one of the nation’s most heated House races. Southerland is seeking his third term.

Buffett, who dropped several Graham references into his songs Wednesday, is the latest in a list of stars tapped by Graham’s campaign for support and to encourage early voting in the closing weeks. With early voting numbers already being analyzed the race has only gotten hotter.

Buffett politely declines class reunion

From Gulflive: “Pascagoula native Jimmy Buffett politely declines class reunion invite, but sends video

Jimmy Buffett was born in Pascagoula on Christmas Day 1946, but moved away with his family to Mobile before starting school.

If the world renowned singer/author/entreprenuer/actor would have remained in Jackson County however, he may well have been celebrating his 50th reunion with his former classmates this weekend.

And his relocation at such a young age didn’t stop one member of the Pascagoula High Class of 1964 from reaching out with an invitation.

Danny “Toad” Smith, one of the committee members for the reunion, sent Buffett a message earlier this year through mutual friends to gauge his interest in attending the event, even though Buffett never attended school in Jackson County.

Smith got a bit of a surprise as a response.

“He sent us a 45-second DVD, recorded on his boat while he was tuna-fishing in Nantucket Sound,” Smith, who like Buffett was born in 1946 at the old Jackson County Hospital, said. “I had no illusions about the probability of his attending, but figured, what the heck, what if he happens to be in the area?

“Along with his regrets that he couldn’t attend he sent his best wishes and mused that had his father had not decided to move to Mobile when Jimmy was five, he might well have graduated with us in 1964 at PHS rather than McGill lnstitute in Mobile.”

Smith, through the help of a friend that works behind the scenes at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, was able to get a Pascagoula High School Class of 1964 T-shirt to Buffett after his show at the Acura Stage in 2012. Normally reluctant to take such gifts from fans, he accepted the shirt since it came from Pascagoula.

Buffett has maintained ties to Pascagoula over the years through relatives including his grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. In a short chapter he wrote for the book, “Growing Up In Mississippi,” Buffett describes summer vacations at his grandmother’s house in Pascagoula on Parsley St., “free of the grasp of the Mobile parochial school system.”

Buffett performs at the Moda Center in Portland

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band continued their 2014 This One’s For You Tour on Thursday night at the The Moda Center in Portland OR. The set list from the show is now available.

From Oregonlive.com: “Jimmy Buffett entertains the Parrotheads at the Moda Center” (some photos are available)

Curious where the term Parrothead came from?

According to Buffett lore, the term was hatched in 1985 after Buffett compared his followers to the Deadheads — the legendary followers of the Grateful Dead. Buffett recalls the moment (via fan site BuffetNews.com):

“Timothy B. Schmidt (the Eagles bass player) was in the band, and we were playing a venue outside of Cincinnati called King’s Island. People had already started wearing Hawaiian shirts to our shows, but we looked out at this Cincinnati crowd, and they were glaringly brilliant to the point where it got our attention immediately. I said “Look at that!” Then Schmidt says to me, “They look like Deadheads in tropical suits. They’re like Parrot Heads!” He yelled to me in the middle of a song. So I immediately took the term and threw it over the microphone – the people identified themselves with the term from the get-go.”

A couple of things I learned from security folks at the Moda Center on Tuesday:

They had a few people on laser patrol. I guess it’s a thing to bring those small laser pointers to concerts and Jimmy Buffett really hates them. Portland doesn’t seem like a laser town to me, but maybe I’m just getting old.
Jimmy Buffett is cool with beach balls in the crowd, but don’t dare get one near the stage. Security was instructed to pop ‘em if they got too close.

Buffett to perform at campaign rally for Gwen Graham

From the Miami Herald blog: Florida music icon Jimmy Buffett plans to hold an Oct. 29 get-out-the-vote rally for Democrat Gwen Graham in her effort to unseat U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland.

Buffett is set to perform “a short acoustic set with his friend Mac McAnally” and tout Graham’s candidacy, according to a press release. More details are forthcoming about the time, location and ticket availability.

From the free media exposure to voter mobilization to fundraising, Buffett’s appearance for Graham is the type of star-power help most candidates dream about. Polling indicates the race between her and Southerland is tight in Congressional District 2, which stretches from the Tallahassee area to Panama City.

The “Margaritaville” singer has been friends with the Graham family for decades. Buffett founded the Save the Manatees advocacy group in 1981 with then-Gov. Bob Graham, the candidate’s father.

Last month, Buffett was spotted in Tallahassee dining at the Governor’s Club in Tallahassee with lobbyists Jeff Sharkey and Taylor Patrick Biehl. They represent Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings.

Buffett asks Spotify for a Raise

From Digitalmusicnews.com: “Jimmy Buffett Asked Spotify for a Raise. Here’s What They Said

at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday, audience QA portion.

Jimmy Buffet to Daniel Ek, Spotify CEO: “Do you see anything in your future where we might get a raise directly from you as opposed to the bullshit you have to go through to deal with a label these days? Musicians only get a trickle after [Spotify payments] have gone through the major label executives.

“How the stream of revenue gets to the artist, particularly the younger struggling artist… it’s really hard to make it in real life if you’re a young artist. So I’m hoping that all the music services would look at that.”

[audience smattering of laughter, applause]
“Because it’s one thing when it goes to the record label, but most of it doesn’t get to the artist.”

Daniel Ek: “Obviously I agree. At first there were a lot of artists that didn’t understand streaming, was it good, was it bad for them. And Spotify, quite quickly started becoming the biggest music service, and right now we’re about 70 percent of all revenues in Sweden, including physical as well. So this is a massive part of the music industry which has actually gone up in revenues.

“And because we started publishing that, that started creating the dialogue between the artist and the industry. And as a side consequence because streaming became such a massive part of the revenues, labels even changed how they started paying out the artists. So instead of once a year, they started paying out much more frequent.
“And right now, we’re actually paying out more than a billion [dollars] in rights payments this year, and more than 70 percent of our revenues go to rights owners.”

Buffett: “But that’s actually still lower than what we used to get.”

Ek: “Of course.”

Buffett: “Which is why I was hoping for a raise.”

Irving Azoff (moderator): “If you’re looking for money, you’re better off selling one of your planes.”

[audience laughter]

Margaritaville to open in Syracuse NY

From Syracuse.com: “It’s official: Destiny USA confirms Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is coming to Syracuse

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville will open at Destiny USA early next year.

The mall officially confirmed this morning what regular readers here have known for months. The entertainment and dining venue is heading to a spot on the third floor of Destiny’s expansion section across from Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar Grill.

The Margaritaville will include 12,000 square feet of entertainment and dining space, a 5 o’clock Somewhere Bar with a live performance stage, multiple dining areas with total seating for 330 people and a 700-square-foot Margaritaville store.

It’ll feature the chain’s signature margaritas and coastal-style food.

A Margaritaville had been rumored for Destiny for years, but things really began to pick up steam in 2014.

The state Legislature passed an exemption to the state’s liquor laws this summer that the venue needed in order to open and hints about the brand’s arrival have been dropping at the mall and elsewhere.

Construction on the space is already underway.
