Buffett delivers UM Commencement Speech

From the Miami Herald: “Buffett dispenses life wisdom to UM grads and parrotheads everywhere

With flip flops on his feet, Jimmy Buffett looked out at hundreds of University of Miami graduates and grabbed the pink stole that had just been draped around his neck to mark his new and lofty honorary degree.

“I started off as a bar singer in Coral Gables,” he told students. “And I got a doctorate now.”

The singer-songwriter brought his signature laid-back island style, along with lots of salty advice, as commencement speaker at a Friday ceremony that also was one of the last for UM President Donna Shalala after 14 years at the helm.

Buffett told the crowd he was inspired to become a marine biologist after visiting the aquarium while on vacation in Florida with his family – and he wanted to study at UM.

“I wanted to be Jacques Cousteau with a Southern accent,” he said.

The closest he got was a nearby bar that’s now called Titanic Restaurant and Brewery, where Buffett said he landed his first paying gig.

He distilled his advice into a checklist for the “ever-elusive future.” The four bits of wisdom he shared: Everything in moderation. Make your avocation your vocation. Go see the world. And “be Santa Claus when you can.”

Wearing aviator sunglasses (he said he forgot his reading glasses,) Buffett encouraged students to get out and see the world. “Use your time well. Beware of falling into the sedentary trap.”

Will he sing his commencement address?

You may have to be graduating Friday at the University of Miami to find out.

With graduation around the corner, the UM has announced that singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett will be among this year’s commencement speakers at one of the ceremonies Friday at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables.

The Margaritaville singer will deliver the commencement address at the undergraduate ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday when students from the schools of architecture, communication, education and human development, marine and atmospheric science, music, and nursing and health studies will cross the stage.

UM’s announcement teases that Buffett “may or may not sing his advice.”

While Buffett is most known for his music, he is also a best-selling author, philanthropist and businessman. He is involved in two restaurant chains named for his top songs Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise.

Buffett performs at Preservation Hall

From NOLA.com: “Jimmy Buffett shook up a $2,000 margarita onstage at Preservation Hall Sunday night”

You never used to need a reservation at Preservation Hall,” goes the deep Jimmy Buffett cut “Reservation at Preservation Hall.” These days, you certainly need one for the Hall’s Jazz Fest Midnight Preserves series, a run of late-night concerts that take place each festival night and feature big-name performers from the Fair Grounds –- unannounced until they hit the venerable St. Peter Street stage –- in concert alongside members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Genial, charming and informal as always, he led a “Who Dat” chant with the audience, which apparently included silver-haired New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, in the middle of a set that included well-loved songs like “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Pencil Thin Mustache,” “I Will Play For Gumbo” and, of course, “Margaritaville.” The Parrothead network may have had advance intel on the surprise performance; most of the audience knew the words to his songs as well as they knew “Who Dat.”

The previously packed room was emptier by then. Most of the Parrotheads had left behind their leader, perhaps having been hit hard by the unexpected shots of warm tequila Buffett poured for fans sitting on the front-row benches. To benefit the Preservation Hall’s education and archival arm, the Preservation Hall Foundation, Buffett fixed a margarita onstage that was auctioned off for a final price of $2,000.

Neither that bit of theater-for-a-good-cause nor, for that matter, the $100-and-up Midnight Preserves ticket prices (which also benefit the Foundation) likely would have been on the menu at the bohemian Preservation Hall of Buffett’s youth. But even 50 years later, the now internationally renowned institution isn’t as polished as all that. Jimmy Buffett’s mixology performance was cut short when a staffer came to the side of the stage to ask for the shaker back. The Hall only had the one, and the courtyard bar needed it to serve cocktails

Buffett performs at Jazz Fest

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band played yesterday at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. The set list from the show is now available. Some changes included “I Will Play For Gumbo” and “Rhumba Man”

From NOLA.com: “Jimmy Buffett showers followers with hits at New Orleans Jazz Fest 2015

Barefoot bard Jimmy Buffett immediately charmed the Acura Stage audience at New Orleans Jazz Fest on Sunday (April 26) when he stepped to the microphone and absurdly identified himself as rapper Pitbull, who was actually appearing at the Congo Square Stage. Time and again during his two-hour performance, the 68-year old country/Caribbean singer delighted the crowd with references to the Crescent City, where he busked in the French Quarter 40 years ago.

During his recitation of the sand and sun anthem “Margaritaville,” the best-selling author modified the lyrics to match the mire that spread out in front of him in the rain-soaked racetrack infield.

“Nibbling on sponge cake,” he sang, “watching the sun bake, all of you at Jazz Fest covered in mud. Strumming my six-string, on my front porch swing, we’re looking a lot better than when there’s a flood.”
